Hug air a' Bhonaid Mòir
I’ve moved several times between 2015 and now, and somewhere in that whirlwind of customs checks, planes, boats, and automobiles, I lost my bonnet. After looking through coat pockets (both mine and the Mrs), old suitcases, and my parents’ scarf drawer, there was nothing for it but to make a replacement. This was also an opportunity for me to see if bamboo yard could replace wool in this project.
Compared to other pieces of traditional Highland dress, the bonnet-- a soft, flat wool cap, usually blue-- is a relatively new fashion. It appeared in the borders during the 1500s, and spread to the Highlands over the next century. By the mid-18th century, it had become a political statement as well as warm and practical headwear and has been closely associated with Jacobitism ever since.
